Harper's titanium clip |
4/25: Today Robbie and Harper had their heart procedures done, called PDA Ligation. The doc told us we can actually watch a similar procedure of this on YOUTube, but so far we just don't have the courage to watch it. Both surgeries went well, both babies tolerated it very well and immediately started to show signs of the surgery benefiting their blood pressures and oxygen levels. Robbie was the big brother who went first, and the surgery took 11 minutes (3:30-3:41pm). It was explained to us that the little heart valve that typically closes in utero will not close on its own outside the womb without help (99% of the time). So they go in with a mini titanium paper clip and the clip's weight closes the valve for them. The doctor's name was Dr. John Nigro. He asked if we had any questions, Pete asked, "This isn't your first PDA surgery is it?" He replied, "Nah, it isn't even my first today." He tried to ease our mind with just how routine this is, they do it right at the bedside of Robbie and Harper. They will have this titanium clip in them for the rest of their lives. Robbie's heart valve was stubborn and needed two clips. His blood pressure showed immediate improvements. Harper went second and it closed with one little clip (4:00-4:10pm). The procedure is done through the back and we were able to see their little incision and stitches. For a few days, they will be sleepy and not appreciative of visitors, holding or touching, so we can only stop by to see them through the incubator.
It was a very scary and stressful day for Pete and I but the St. Joes team is so competent and unbelievable, they take our breath away. Pete's awesome co-workers picked up the slack for the afternoon so he could be with me and stop my panic attacks in the waiting room. (Love you Chapman VW). We are grateful and thankful for all the texts and kind words and prayers that were coming throughout the day. We know it is keeping our babies strong and we believe in the power of prayer and positive thoughts.
