Did You Know???

Did you know..... Even a 1 lb 14 oz baby boy (Robinson) will grab his wee-wee when getting his diaper changed? It must be instinctual.

Did you know...... It does not matter if it is a full term baby or a micro preemie baby, all boys pee on you when getting their diaper changed? It happens to Pete and I weekly.

Did you know.....Although some micro preemies can end up having delays in their development, they are considered to have a "fighting spirit" due to learning early on how to survive; to keep moving forward despite having surgeries, lab pricks, picc lines, breathing tubes, head scans and heart scans on an almost daily basis. They learn to be resilient and continue moving forward which can benefit them later if they need to tap into that resource within themselves.

Did you know....Kangaroo care has been endlessly researched and found to decrease the chance for infection, stabilize blood pressure problems, stabilize oxygen levels, speed up weight gain, and on average, a nicu baby that is held in this way, skin to skin, will leave the hospital 2 weeks earlier than a baby who is not.

Did you know....Although preemie babies with breathing tubes cannot make noise because the tube sits between their vocal chords, they can still cry, coo, and have little temper tantrums. They display this with a scrunched up forehead and open mouth...... they just don't have the noise to go along with it. They are feeling the same emotion as a baby with a voice. Women in the nicu have told me that their babies look astonished when they hear their voice for the first time.

Did you know.....When the twins were born, they did not have eye lids or open eyes. They just had skin across their eye sockets and their eyes were called "fused." They didn't have the little slit where the eye would eventually open. A few weeks later, a little slit in the skin started making it's way across the lid. Slowly we could see them trying to open them. At one point, Robbie had one eye unfused, and one still fused, he looked like a little pirate.

Did you know........Female preemies tend to do better than males in the first 3 months of life, then the males tend to catch up and do well themselves. The nurses actually have a nickname for this, "WWB" because it's so common. It stands for "Wimpy White Boy" syndrome because they tend to need more TLC in their early beginnings. My co-worker Carolyn calls Harper the "cheerleader" because she is leading the way, paving the path.

Harper eyes open. She likes to hold on to her ears like little handles.

Harper is a gorgeous girl. I can't stop looking at her and admiring her strong soul.
We adore our girl.

Legs up, big stretch

Sad face...the nurses say she can talk with her eyes.
You don't have to guess how she is feeling at any moment.

Who is here? Hi mum!
Harper also seems to notice when a new nurse shift starts, she notices new voices.
Sooo smart.

Mom weighs Harper in the incubator

.............When you find yourself at a place in your life, where there is something significant happening, that you have virtually no control over, you are forced to take a hard and close look at your relationship with your Higher Power and how much faith you are putting in Him.This can be a very important time in a person's life... in a marriage... it will change you forever...........

  1. I was very premature, a twin, and born to a woman who checked into rehab after her pregnancy.

I have had two eye surgeries, but I have no driving restrictions. I use an inhaler for my asthma, but I've run a 5k before. I have auditory processing difficulties, but I play violin and piano and took nine foreign language classes in school.

I know that I have a purpose on this earth and God wanted me to have this life. I know that my spirit wanted this life with all of the blessings and trials that come with it. I know that my parents wanted me more than anything and were willing to make any sacrifice for that- even if it meant five years of raising me without knowing if they could adopt me.

In my family, we celebrate the day I came home to my parents. Maybe we need a family party for the day when the babies come home! :)
